“I’m Not Photogenic.” Here’s the Truth

It’s the first thing people say to me before a headshot session:

“I’m not photogenic.”

Let me reassure you: after photographing hundreds of professionals across corporate, healthcare, and personal branding sectors, being photogenic isn’t something you’re born with. It’s something created.

And it’s my job to create it.

Why You Think You’re Not Photogenic

Most people base this belief on:

  • A rushed phone photo

  • Bad lighting

  • Being caught mid-sentence

  • Or not knowing what to do with their hands

That’s not a reflection of you. That’s a reflection of poor direction and lighting.

A strong headshot isn’t about posing perfectly. It’s about being comfortable, confidence and subtle guidance

What Actually Makes Someone Look Good in a Headshot?

It comes down to three things:

1. Direction: You’re never left wondering what to do. I guide posture, chin position, eye line, and expression naturally and conversationally.

2. Lighting: Lighting shapes the face. It defines structure, softens features, and creates presence. Done correctly, it adds authority without harshness.

3. Energy: A great headshot captures who you are on your best day. Not a stiff version of you trying to “look professional.”

Corporate vs Personal Brand Headshots

For corporate professionals, your image should communicate:

  • Competence

  • Approachability

  • Authority

For personal branding, it goes further:

  • Personality

  • Values

  • Leadership presence

Your headshot should grow as your career grows. If your profile photo is five years old, chances are it no longer reflects who you are today.

What Happens in My Sessions

There’s no awkward silence. No rapid-fire shooting. No “just smile.”

We talk. We adjust. We refine.

Sometimes the plan changes mid-shoot, from a busy office, changing light, unexpected interruptions. That’s experience at work. I adapt so you don’t have to worry.

Most clients say the same thing at the end:

“That was much easier than I expected.”

And that’s the point.

The Reality

You’re not unphotogenic. You’ve just never been photographed properly.

A professional headshot isn’t about vanity. It’s about visibility and being seen as confident.

In business, perception shapes opportunity.

If you’re ready to look like the confident professional you already are, so let’s create it properly!
